SpaceShipOne made history on June 21, 2004, by flying to outer space and becoming the world's first privately funded rocket ship to carry a human into space. The flight marked the first time that a non-government spacecraft reached the altitude of 62 miles which is considered the boundary between earth's atmosphere and outer space. The project is the brainchild of aeronautics entrepreneur Burt Rutan and is funded by billionaire Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft. Pilot Mike Melvill, 63, was at the commands of the space ship.
